Hiring Trends: The Rise of Remote Working in Latam

The idea of the workplace is expanding beyond the office walls. Companies are exploring further afield to find the right people. And people are discovering the right place to work, wherever that may be.

As a result, we’re seeing huge changes in where companies are hiring, and where their hires tend to be. Particularly in Latin America.

Below, we dig into hiring data, as well as our own data on equipment procurement in the region, to paint a holistic picture of Latam’s growing dominance on the remote hiring scene.

Growth of hiring from, and into Latin America 

For the last two years, there has been a surge in global hiring in the Latam region.

According to Deel’s State of Hiring Reports 2021 and 2022, global hiring from Latam grew by 286% in the second half of 2021, and by 161% in the first half of 2022.  

To put this into perspective, the growth rate for organizations hiring from Latam was 36% higher than from EMEA and 59% higher than from Asia Pacific. 

The same was true for countries hiring remote workers in the region. 

Hiring into Latam grew by 156% in 2021, 49% more than the region with second highest growth, APAC, and 60% more than EMEA. 

The specifics: country, role, and salary data for Latam

When we look at the specifics, we get a better idea of where the majority of remote workers are based, what roles they’re doing, what they’re being paid etc. Which may be a good indicator of where you can expect future applicants from, and what their remuneration expectations are.

At a high level:

  • The top countries where remote talent is hired - Argentina, Brazil and Mexico.
  • The top roles workers are being hired for - Software Engineers, Graphic Designers, and Product Managers. 

Countries to watch

But other countries are up and coming, such as Uruguay and Colombia. 

Last year (2022), organizations in Uruguay were hiring at the fastest rate of all Latam countries, and Colombia was the third most popular destination for remote workers to be hired into.

Role trends

The top roles being hired in the region through Deel paints a picture of the type of talent that is thriving in Latam. 

For the last two years, Software Engineers and Developers have topped the chart. In 2021, Call Centre Agents and Account Executives were the second and third most commonly hired roles. In 2022, however, there were more Salespeople and Product Managers getting hired in the region.    

Salary changes

Salaries paid through Deel have risen greatly in the last two years also, especially in the countries with smaller economies. In 2021, Ecuador and The Dominican Republic saw employee salaries rise by 129% and 128% respectively, while in 2022, the countries with the largest salary gains were Chile, Guatemala, and Honduras. 

Equipment trends on Hofy

Unsurprisingly, our data reinforces the picture painted by Deel. From 2021 to 2022, employees in Latam equipped through Hofy rose by a staggering 1458%, and by a further 10% a year later. However, it’s worth noting that Hofy grew significantly between 2021 and 2022, allowing for more capacity for orders during this time.  

Argentina, Brazil and Mexico are the top 3 countries in the region that Hofy supplies equipment to. 

There are clear crowd pleasers when it comes to what equipment remote employees are using - which you may want to bear in mind when creating your Teams and approving products on the Hofy platform. Apple devices and peripherals lead the way for equipment choice in the region. 

The Apple MacBook Pro 14” and 13” are the two most popular devices, while the Dell XPS 13 is the third choice. When the most popular laptops are Apple, it’s unsurprising, employees are choosing to pair them with the Apple Magic Mouse and keyboard above all. The alternative option is most commonly the Logitech MK40 keyboard and mouse combo. 

Latam: the future is now

It’s clear to see that Latin America has become a global hiring powerhouse in recent years. The tech sector is growing, while more and more companies are hiring talent in the region.
